The Midnight Train: Part Two
We pick up where the first part left off. The camera opens with the dim, flickering lights of the train compartment. It’s past midnight, and our protagonist, ALEX, stares out the window. The world outside the window is pitch-black, with no signs of life. The train moves, but where it’s heading remains a mystery.
"Some journeys take you farther than you ever expected. Alex thought she was going home, but this was a trip she never signed up for."
Alex looks around the train compartment. The passengers, who were once alive with chatter in the last part, are now eerily silent. Their eyes seem glazed, faces pale. It’s as if something has drained their life force. Alex’s heart races. She tries to recall how she got here—this wasn’t the same train she boarded, was it?
Alex decides to investigate. As she walks through the train cars, the air gets colder, and each compartment feels more detached from reality. She passes passengers who seem frozen in time—some appear to be whispering, but she can’t hear any words.
She enters a dimly lit car where an old man, MR. GRAVES, sits alone. His presence is unsettling, but Alex’s curiosity takes over. He lifts his head slowly and speaks, his voice deep and slow.
Mr. Graves:
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Alex frowns, "What do you mean? I’m on the train home."
Mr. Graves shakes his head. “This train... it never goes home. It only takes.”
Alex’s confusion grows. She questions him further, but the old man refuses to speak any more. Just as she’s about to leave, he grabs her wrist and says, “Listen. You still have a chance. But when the conductor comes, you must not—" He stops abruptly, his eyes wide with fear.
The lights in the train flicker and dim further. The sound of heavy footsteps approaches from the front of the car. Alex, now on edge, remembers Mr. Graves’ words. A figure dressed in a dark conductor’s uniform slowly enters the car. His face is obscured by shadows, and he carries a lantern that emits a strange, otherworldly glow.
He moves slowly, stopping at each passenger, as if inspecting them. When he reaches Mr. Graves, the old man bows his head in defeat, and the conductor places a hand on his shoulder. The air around them grows colder, and Mr. Graves vanishes—completely disappearing into thin air.
Alex gasps in shock, and the conductor’s attention snaps to her. She quickly looks away, remembering Mr. Graves’ warning. She tries to act calm as the conductor slowly approaches. He stands by her for a moment, his presence suffocating. After what feels like an eternity, he moves on.
Shaken, Alex retreats to her seat. She rummages through her bag for her ticket, noticing something strange about it now. The words on the ticket are shifting, forming cryptic symbols. Her ticket is no longer for her intended destination. It reads “Final Stop: Perdition”.
Alex begins to panic. She needs to get off this train, but it’s moving at an impossible speed, with no way out. She looks around, noticing that the few remaining passengers have all become lifeless, pale shadows of their former selves.
As she frantically moves to another car, she stumbles upon a young boy, DAVID, who seems just as terrified as her. Unlike the other passengers, David seems “real,” aware of the situation. He tells her that they’re on the Midnight Train, a train that collects lost souls and delivers them to an unknown fate.
David:
“There’s only one way off. But you have to find the right door.”
Alex, desperate, follows David. Together, they make their way through the various compartments, each stranger and more unsettling than the last. The passengers they pass begin to fade into smoke, disappearing as the train speeds faster into the dark unknown.
They reach a locked door near the back of the train. David tells Alex that beyond this door is the last stop, but she must choose whether to stay on the train or face what’s on the other side. The conductor suddenly appears behind them, his lantern glowing fiercely. He speaks for the first time, his voice a low, rumbling sound.
“No one leaves the Midnight Train.”
David vanishes before her eyes, leaving Alex alone with the towering conductor. She knows she must act fast. With a deep breath, she opens the door, stepping into a brilliant, blinding light.
As the light fades, Alex finds herself standing on an empty platform in the middle of nowhere. The train is gone. She’s not sure if she’s escaped or if she’s entered another trap. The platform is eerily quiet, and she wonders if this is really the end—or just another beginning.
